Acne or pimples appears first in the teens to make the fashion and beauty conscious people become frustrated and anguished. This is the phase in life when looking good becomes so important. And after troubling for a few years, when everything seems to have settled down it comes back to trouble once more. This return of the pimples is referred to as adult acne.

Though not such a major problem as teenage acne, but the fact is that, adult acne according to estimates affects also affects a big section of the population. According to estimates, as many as 1 in 4 males in the 30’s are affected by it. And half of all females when they are between the age of 30 and 40 get adult acne. However there are those who believe that the disease is more common than these statistics indicate among adults. Though it happens mainly in the 30’s, but at least in some, acne can happen in the 20’s or even after the 40’s as well.

Like acne in the teens, adult acne is frustrating and depressing as well.

Why does acne come back in adults? And why does adult acne happen more in females rather than males? Well, this has something to do with the hormonal changes and imbalances that happen particularly due to the changes in a female body. Firstly there’s the menstrual cycle, then there is pregnancy, and lastly there’s menopause. One side effect of all these changes is the growth of the pimples. High levels of the DHT hormone are a prime suspect. Treating acne without addressing these high hormone levels is akin to scooping water from a sinking boat with holes in it - the acne keeps coming back.

On the other hand in males, adult acne appears is accounted to the levels of testosterone. When testosterone converts to DHT, it results in the growths of the acne lesions all over the body including the face.

Other causes of adult acne include over use of cosmetics (they can lead to infections), medicines (side effects from them) and the use of birth control pills (they have androgen that is not good). Stress at work place and at home is another reason. Stress can overcompensate the oil glands leading to an overproduction, thus covering up of the pores that lead to adult acne. Industrial chemicals can also cause acne in adults – and that is why the disease is noticed more among factory workers.

The treatment for teen acne and adult acne is almost similar, as are the symptoms and the nature of the problem. When picked, adult acne can also lead to scarring, and so, no matter how much the temptation, refrain from itching the lesions. Getting the hormone levels checked is the first thing to do when someone develops adult acne. Another thing that needs to be kept in mind is that the immunity levels go down with age, so when there is adult acne, it is important to be more careful than in the teen years.
